The .410 Verdict is for the Defense!

4 pellet vs 12 gauge

Hoening Big Bore Slug introduces the VerdictTM line of .410 bore shotgun self defense loads in 2.5 inch and 3 inch plastic hulls. These are intended for use in .410 smooth bore, rifled .410 barrels,  .45-410 pistols and long guns and 45/410 revolvers. The Verdicttm line results from testing of self defense loads with the following in mind:

1. Increase the payload of 2.5 and 3 inch cartridges and provide a definitive up-close attack stopper.

2. Control the spread of multiple projectiles out of rifled .410 and .45-.410 barrels (better than buck shot) .

3. Increase the impact surface of the projectile(s), thus transfering more energy to the target and reducing chance of complete pass through do to overpenetration.

4. Reduced chance of hitting unwanted targets by a complete pass through.

5. Create the perfect load for inside the home or car and still provide some extended range benefit of multi-projectiles on targets at longer ranges.

6. Put more power into the kill zone at longer distance.

Keep in mind these are not target or hunting loads while evaluating their effectiveness as defense loads. The following photographs and comments should demonstrate the success of the VerdictTM line at accomplishing the above goals. In some aspects the .410 bore multi-pellet loads may rival or even beat the capability of the 12 gauge slug and come in a smaller package; compare the cross sectional area, metplat area, and expanded slug area. At some ranges the 12 gauge may pass through without complete expansion (close range) and at some distances the shooter may miss the target completely. In some aspects the 12 gauge is superior so compare the two when considering your own needs and of course consider 12 gauge shot loads. The comparison to 12 gauge slugs is to show the power and energy transfer of the VerdictTM defense loads and of course a big plus for the .410 is its availability for use in a pistol. Take a look and you be the judge of this 410!

The following photos are from test firing the VerdictTM out of a 14 inch .45-.410 barrel, you can see penetration is very good;  these are hard oak boards. You can see the pellet spread and penetration variation with the increased distance to target.

The attack stops here! At 10 feet the 4-slug mass expanded to 1.09 inch, weight was 346gr going in and 342.6gr recovered. Average muzzle velocity 1088fps!

Just what is the point?

That is it exactly, there is no point! and there is no round ball to facilitate entry, just hard hitting flat! Do a web search using "bullet metplat energy transfer" for an explanation and arguments for this type of design and its effects.  You may find a good explanation here but be warned, if you are squeemish or find death and destruction too much to view. The site is very graphic with photos and gets the point across very bluntly: http://www.ballisticstudies.com/articles/meplat/meplat.html
